Fabric construction
Woven vs Knitted Fabric
Woven vs knitted fabric is the most basic choice behind how a cloth behaves: woven fabric is made of yarns interlaced at right angles (warp and weft) for stability and structure, while knitted fabric is made of interlooped yarn that gives stretch and softness. This guide compares the two side by side — drape, stretch, stability, wrinkles, fraying and best uses — so you specify the right construction before you order rolls.
Quick verdict
How to choose for your product.
Choose woven when you want structure, shape retention and a crisp, tailored finish — abayas, shirts, dresses, suiting, trousers and most finished garment fabric. Woven cloth holds its shape, presses to a clean line and resists stretching out of form, which is why it dominates structured wear. The trade-offs: it has little stretch unless elastane is added, it creases and needs pressing, and the cut edges fray and must be finished.
Choose knitted when you want stretch, comfort and movement — jersey tops, T-shirts, activewear, leggings, underwear and soft loungewear. Knit loops flex in every direction, spring back into shape, resist wrinkles and feel soft against the skin. The trade-offs: knits drape softly rather than holding a structured silhouette, and a broken loop can run or snag.
The fastest rule: if it stretches and springs back, it is knitted; if it is stable, crisp and frays at a cut edge, it is woven. For abaya, dress and most garment fabric the answer is almost always woven — which is what Sundust supplies.
Side by side
Woven vs knitted at a glance.
| Attribute | Woven fabric | Knitted fabric |
|---|---|---|
| Structure | Warp & weft yarns interlaced at right angles on a loom | A single yarn looped through itself (interlooped) on a knitting machine |
| Stretch | Low — little give unless elastane is blended in | High — natural multi-directional stretch from the loops |
| Drape | Structured; hangs with body and holds a tailored line | Soft and fluid; conforms and clings to the body |
| Stability / shape retention | Excellent — keeps its shape and dimensions | Lower — can stretch out, but loops recover well |
| Wrinkles | Creases easily; needs pressing to stay crisp | Wrinkle-resistant; springs back without ironing |
| Fraying | Cut edges fray and ravel — must be overlocked or hemmed | Does not fray, but a broken loop can run or snag |
| Breathability | Depends on weave density; can be tight and crisp | Open loop structure breathes and ventilates well |
| Best for | Abayas, shirts, dresses, suiting, trousers, formalwear | T-shirts, jersey, activewear, leggings, underwear, loungewear |

Which we supply
Sundust supplies woven finished fabric.
Sundust deals primarily in woven finished fabrics — the construction behind abayas, dresses and most garment cloth. Our core range is woven polyester and blends: nida, crepe, chiffon, satin, shirting and suiting, all chosen for the stable drape and clean tailored finish that woven cloth gives. If your product needs structure, opacity and shape retention — which covers the great majority of MENA garment work — woven is the right construction, and it is what we stock and dye-lot match across an order.
For dress and overlay fabric in woven polyester qualities, see our polyester fabric wholesale range. For shirting, suiting and lining in woven garment cloth, see our garment fabric wholesale range. Where a soft, stretchy hand is needed — a jersey lining or an activewear piece — tell us and we will advise on a suitable knit; but our strength, and what most buyers come to us for, is stable woven cloth.
Common questions
Woven vs knitted, answered.
What is the main difference between woven and knitted fabric?
Construction. Woven fabric is made of two sets of yarns — warp and weft — interlaced at right angles on a loom, which makes it stable and structured. Knitted fabric is made of one yarn looped through itself, which makes it stretchy and soft. That single difference drives everything else: stretch, drape, wrinkles and fraying. See how fabric is made for where this step sits in the wider process.
Which is better for an abaya or a dress?
Woven, in almost every case. Abayas and structured dresses need opacity, a clean drape and shape retention over long panels — exactly what woven cloth gives. Knits are reserved for stretch pieces like jersey tops, activewear and soft linings. The woven crepes, nida and chiffons in our polyester yarn range are built for this.
Does woven fabric stretch at all?
Very little on its own — that stability is the point. When a garment needs give, a small percentage of elastane (spandex) is blended in to make a woven stretch cloth, common in trousers and fitted dresses. For full multi-directional stretch you need a knit. The way yarn is spun and finished also affects hand — see our fabric finishing process guide.
How do I order woven fabric wholesale?
Start with swatches to confirm construction, GSM, width and shade, then scale to rolls or containers. We dye-lot match across an order so a production run stays uniform. Contact us with your garment and spec and we will recommend the right woven cloth and send samples with wholesale pricing.
