Fabric guide

What Is Nida Fabric?

Nida fabric is a soft, matte, opaque polyester cloth that has become the standard material for modern abayas — lightweight enough for Gulf heat, dense enough to stay fully opaque, and dye-able to a deep, even black. This guide covers what nida is made of, its key properties, the main types, and how to buy it wholesale.

Definition & composition

What nida fabric is made of.

Nida is a finely woven, high-grade polyester fabric — some qualities are a poly blend with a small share of viscose or spandex for extra softness and stretch. The yarn is spun fine and woven tight, then given a matte, dull finish rather than a shine. That combination is what gives nida its signature look: flat, elegant and completely non-transparent.

Because the base fibre is polyester, nida is strong, holds colour well and resists wrinkling and shrinkage. The fabric usually sits between roughly 120 and 160 GSM — light to the hand but still fully opaque — and is woven at common dress widths of 145–150 cm. The fineness of the weave is what lets a lightweight cloth stay opaque without feeling heavy.

The name is used across the modest-wear trade for this matte polyester abaya cloth. It is sometimes called “nidah” or grouped with similar matte crepes, but in the abaya market “nida” specifically means this soft, opaque, drapey polyester finish.

Key properties

Why nida works for abayas.

Matte finish

A flat, dull surface with no shine — the elegant, formal look the abaya market expects, and one that holds a deep, even black.

Soft drape

Nida falls in smooth, fluid lines rather than standing stiff, so an abaya moves and hangs gracefully on the body.

Full opacity

The tight fine weave is completely non-transparent, giving the full coverage modest wear requires — even in lighter weights.

Lightweight & breathable

At roughly 120–160 GSM the cloth is light and airy, comfortable to wear through Gulf summers and long days.

GSM range

Typically 120–160 GSM at 145–150 cm width — light qualities for summer abayas, heavier ones for structured robes.

Easy care

Polyester base resists wrinkling and shrinkage, washes easily and keeps its shape, so finished abayas stay neat with little effort.
Types of nida

Korean, Japanese & Dubai nida.

Nida is graded mainly by the origin and spec of the yarn and finish. The three names buyers ask for most are Korean, Japanese and Dubai (local) nida.

Korean nida is the premium benchmark — a soft hand, superior black depth and consistent matte finish, favoured for higher-end abayas. See our dedicated guide to Korean nida fabric for spec and pricing. Japanese nida is similarly fine, prized for a smooth drape and fade-resistant colour. Dubai or local nida covers the widely traded Gulf-market qualities — good value, dependable opacity and the everyday workhorse for volume abaya production.

The practical difference between them is hand-feel, black depth and price. The right choice depends on whether you are making premium pieces or volume basics — we can match any of these grades and dye-lot match across rolls.

Common questions

Nida fabric, answered.

Is nida fabric the best fabric for an abaya?

For most modern abayas, yes — nida balances opacity, soft drape, light weight and easy care better than almost any alternative, which is why it is the market default. If you are weighing it against crepe, chiffon or formal blacks, see our guide to the best fabric for abaya.

How do you wash and care for nida?

Nida is low-maintenance. Machine or hand wash cool, avoid high heat, and hang to dry — the polyester base resists wrinkles and shrinkage, so most pieces need little or no ironing. If pressing is needed, use a low iron.

What is the difference between nida and other abaya fabrics?

Nida is matte, opaque and drapey at a light weight; crepe has a textured, pebbled surface; chiffon is sheer and used for overlays. Nida’s flat finish and full coverage are what make it the everyday abaya cloth. Learn how to buy it in volume on our nida fabric wholesale page.
